On an extreme day trip, airport transfer time is stolen city time. A 90-minute bus from a distant airport can erase your morning entirely. The best extreme day trip cities put their airports close to the centre — with fast trains or metros that deliver you to the sights within 15 to 30 minutes of landing. These are the destinations where the transfer is barely a footnote.

01
Vienna — 16 minutes on the City Airport Train
The CAT runs every 30 minutes from Vienna airport to Wien Mitte-Landstraße. No traffic, no confusion. You can be walking the Ringstraße within 25 minutes of leaving the terminal. Vienna extreme day trips are among the most time-efficient from the UK.

02
Amsterdam — 15 minutes to Centraal
The train from Schiphol runs every few minutes and drops you at Amsterdam Centraal. The canal ring is a 10-minute walk from the station. No bus, no taxi, no guesswork. This is the gold standard for airport-to-centre speed.

03
Copenhagen — 15 minutes on the metro
Metro line M2 from Kastrup reaches Kongens Nytorv in 15 minutes. Change is not required for the main sights. Copenhagen's airport link is clean, fast and runs all day — perfect for early arrivals and late returns.

04
Geneva — 7 minutes to Cornavin
Geneva airport has its own train station. The ride to Gare Cornavin in the city centre takes seven minutes. Lake Geneva and the old town are walking distance from the station. Extreme day trips to Geneva are almost unfairly efficient.

05
Lisbon — 25 minutes to Baixa
The metro red line from Humberto Delgado reaches Baixa-Chiado in about 25 minutes. Not the fastest on this list, but still excellent for a capital city. The Alfama and Belém are reachable without a taxi.

06
Zurich — 10 minutes to Hauptbahnhof
Zurich airport train to the main station takes 10 minutes and runs every few minutes. The old town and lakefront are a short walk from the station. Switzerland is expensive, but you will not waste money or time on transfers.
Airport transfers that look fast but are not
Paris Beauvais is marketed as 'Paris' but the bus takes 80 minutes. Milan Bergamo is 50 minutes from the city. Frankfurt Hahn is two hours from Frankfurt. Always check which airport your flight actually lands at — the headline city name on the ticket is not the transfer time. A £20 saving on a flight to a distant airport often costs you two hours on the ground. For extreme day trips, pay the small premium for the central airport every time.
