Extreme day trips live or die by what you carry. Checked luggage wastes time at both ends; an overstuffed cabin bag slows you through security and hurts your shoulders by evening. This packing list covers everything you need for an 18-hour day abroad — and explicitly what to leave at home. Pack it the night before, weigh the bag once, and do not add anything in the morning.

Documents and money
Passport (check expiry — six months is the safe rule for most of Europe). Physical or digital boarding passes, screenshot the airport transfer route. Contactless debit card and a small amount of local currency for stalls that do not take cards. European Health Insurance Card or travel insurance details saved offline. Phone with offline maps downloaded for your destination.

Clothing — layers, not options
Wear your bulkiest items on the plane: trainers or comfortable walking shoes, jeans or trousers, a light jacket. Pack one spare top in case of spills. No second pair of shoes. No 'just in case' outfit. A compact packable rain jacket if the forecast is uncertain. Sunglasses and a cap in summer.

03
Toiletries — 100 ml rule, minimal kit
Clear liquids bag: travel-size sunscreen, hand sanitiser, lip balm. Solid deodorant avoids the liquids limit. No full-size shampoo — you are home tonight. A pack of tissues and wet wipes. Any prescription medication in original packaging with your name on the label.

04
Tech and entertainment
Phone charger and a small power bank (check airline rules for capacity). Wired earphones for the flight. Download podcasts, music and offline maps before you leave home. A physical book if you prefer reading on the plane. No laptop unless you genuinely need it — it is weight you will carry all day.

05
Comfort for a long day
Reusable water bottle — empty through security, fill airside. Snacks for the flight: nuts, a cereal bar, an apple. Eye mask and earplugs if you want to nap on the return. Blister plasters — non-negotiable if you are breaking in new shoes (do not break in new shoes). A light scarf doubles as a blanket on the plane.

What NOT to pack
Checked luggage. Hair dryer — hotels have them; you are not staying in one. More than one book. Full-size toiletries. A towel unless you are swimming (use a microfibre travel towel). Heels or uncomfortable shoes. A 'going out' outfit separate from your day clothes. Every item you pack, you carry for 18 hours.
The night-before packing routine
Lay everything out on the bed. Remove one item — there is always something you do not need. Put liquids in the clear bag. Charge your phone and power bank to 100%. Screenshot boarding passes, transfer routes and your return alarm time. Weigh the bag. Set two alarms: one to wake up, one for when you need to leave the house. Put the bag by the door. Go to bed early — you need the sleep more than one more scroll through restaurant reviews.
